Job Description
Basic Function:BASIC FUNCTION:
Responsible for teaching lecture and laboratory classes in beginning, intermediate and advanced American Sign Language (ASL). The assignment may also include courses in conversation and in culture, or other courses in the discipline.

Responsible for teaching lecture and laboratory classes in beginning, intermediate and advanced American Sign Language (ASL). The assignment may also include courses in conversation and in culture, or other courses in the discipline, which may also include teaching ASL/English Interpreting courses. The ideal candidate will share Riverside City College's commitment to educating its ethnically and socioeconomically diverse student population. The successful candidate will join the World Languages Department and faculty dedicated to the principles of community colleges, learning, diversity, equity, educational opportunity and student success.

Education:EDUCATION:
Bachelor's degree and two years of full-time or equivalent part-time professional experience; OR Associate's degree and six years of full-time or equivalent part-time professional experience; OR the equivalent is required. Master's degree, with 2 years teaching experience, in ASL and deaf studies, ASL curriculum, Interpretation, or ASL linguistics is preferred. (All degrees and units used to satisfy minimum qualifications shall be from accredited institutions.)
Experience:EXPERIENCE: A minimum of two years of successful experience teaching ASL classes at the college level is desirable. Evidence of online instruction is also desired.

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- For Interpreter Education candidates, 5 years' experience as a professional ASL Interpreter in the field and RID or BEI Certification.
- Native or near-native fluency in ASL, English, and/or Spanish, including demonstrative effective communication in written English;
- Participation in professional development activities and maintaining current knowledge in the discipline;
- Maintaining office hours for student contact;
- Technology competency: an ability to create content for courses, as well as an ability to teach synchronously, asynchronously, hybrid, in person.
- Canvas experience/certification, as well as general DE training for different modalities of instruction (HYB, ONL, and REG MEET Zoom)
- Developing resources, materials, and strategies, including using multimedia technology to teach students in a multicultural environments;
- Demonstrating knowledge of the ASL/Interpreting fields and an ability to advise students about professional opportunities;
- Demonstrating an awareness of how to prepare students to work as partners within the Deaf communities, particularly among trilingual Deaf communities;
- Experience preparing students to become interpreters/ transliterators, including Trilingual interpreters/ transliterators;
- MA degree in related field of study preferred (i.e.: ASL instruction, ASL Interpretation, ASL Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, etc.) with 2 years ASL or Interpreter Education teaching experience preferred;
- Membership in ASLTA, CIT, RID, BEI;
- Demonstrative knowledge in current issues in ASL, Deaf Culture, Deaf People of Color, and Interpreting communities
- An ability and commitment to communicate professionally and work collegially within the Department and with stakeholders, industry partners, and all college employees;
- A commitment to a nurturing attitude to foster students' intellectual and personal growth.

Duties and Responsibilities:DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:
1. Fulfill the duties of a full-time instructor, including, but not limited to, holding weekly office hours and completing 24 hours of 'flex credit' through various available activities and seminars.
2. The instructional assignment will include lecture and laboratory classes in the discipline(s) assigned.
3. Faculty will participate in outcomes assessment work.
4. Faculty assignment is based upon the assumption of workload of forty hours weekly, including but not limited to conducting classes, class preparation, student evaluation, office hours, committee work, curriculum and program development, learning outcomes assessment, program review, student activities, and other duties per the bargaining unit agreement. Hours may include evenings, weekends, and off-site locations.
5. Institutional service activities are expected of all faculty members.
6. Participation in discipline/department decision-making processes and work regarding curriculum, program development, scheduling Improvement of Instruction, and other professional matters is expected.
7. Responsibilities also include maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position.

Conditions of Employment:CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
1. Ten-month, tenure-track position.
2. Salary is commensurate with academic preparation, and full-time teaching or equivalent experience with a range from Column C, Step 1 to Column H, Step 6 of the current Faculty Salary Schedule.
3. Medical and dental benefits are provided for the employee and legal dependents.
4. A $50,000 life insurance policy is provided for the employee.
5. Orientation to college is required as is adherence to Improvement of Instruction policy.
6. Maintaining broad knowledge of the academic or occupational area and design pedagogy related to learning outcomes is also expected.
7. Responsible for all other conditions of employment required of full-time faculty members such as a willingness to be involved in District and College promotional activities, active participation in college committee work, student activities and other support services, and appropriate professional activities.
